Carleton College fly-in program for underrepresented senior students

Every fall, Carleton College sponsors a fly-in program for underrepresented senior students called Taste of Carleton (TOC). Students who are accepted will be able to visit their campus, with all expenses paid, during the month of October. This is a great way for students to get a real feel for what Carleton is like, both on an academic and social level.

The 2015 TOC program is scheduled for Thursday, October 29 - Saturday, October 31. Students must complete an online application (as well as submit a transcript, senior schedule, and standardized test score) by September 3 in order to be considered for the program.

Distance shouldn’t stand between you and your dream school. If the college you’re hoping to attend is in another state, consider visiting the campus before you apply. Some schools offer so-called fly-in programs, where first-generation students “can see the school for themselves at little to no cost,” says Laura Stratton, director of admissions at Scripps College in Southern California. These visits typically include free overnight stays, information sessions and campus tours.

When attending a fly-in program isn’t possible, see if colleges will be hosting events in your area. Local college fairs are a great alternative. Admissions representatives will likely attend fairs in your state where you can learn more about the campus without venturing far from home.

University of Penn Early Exploration Program

This fall, Penn will revive and enhance their fly-in program with a new focus on serving students who are a part of our partner community based organizations in addition to historically underrepresented students attending school in the United States. Penn Admissions will fully sponsor students accepted to this program, which includes all costs associated with food, housing, and transportation.

The program runs from October 12 - October 14, 2014 and allows students to gain a first-hand experience with the academic and social atmosphere at Penn as they continue to hone their college lists. The three goals for this program are:

•  To allow students to explore the interdisciplinary academic paths at Penn 
•  To help students strengthen their applications to highly selective institutions 
•  To inform students about Penn's no-loan, all grant financial aid program

Given Penn's firm commitment to enrolling a talented and diverse class, they are specifically seeking seniors who are from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and/or historically underrepresented groups, including Africa-American, Latino, Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian. The ideal candidates would be those who are academically high achieving, have demonstrated leadership, and are interested in either studying the liberal arts, business, engineering, and/or nursing.
