Metropolitan Education Commission Civic Engagement Day

| Yesterday, 3/7/2018, students from 10 Tucson area high schools, through the Metropolitan Education Commission and being part of the Youth Advisory Council/Tucson Teen Congress, participated in a Civic Engagement Day in Phoenix, speaking to lawmakers in the House and Senate regarding their concerns on multiple topics including school safety, prison education funding, certified teacher retention, school counselor recruitment, and college readiness. High school students! We need to hear from you! The Metropolitan Education Commission's (MEC) Teen Town Hall is Friday, October 20, 2017. 9am-11am. Catalina High School Auditorium. 3645 E. Goal One: Graduate!/Meta Numero Uno: Graduar! Poster Contest
The Metropolitan Education Commission (MEC) is proud to announce that the 21st Annual Goal One: Graduate!/Meta Numero Uno: Graduar! Poster Contest is underway! Below is a link to the flyer for the 2016 contest, which outlines how elementary, middle and high school students can enter. One piece of artwork will be selected representing each of three educational levels. Entries can be mailed or dropped off at: Metropolitan Education Commission, 930 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85719
Due Date – FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016, 4:00 p.m.
Contest prizes are: Elementary School - $100.00; Middle School - $100.00; High School - $100.00.
The winners will be invited to attend, and given special recognition at the Metropolitan Education Commission’s Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon, which is scheduled for FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2016 at the Desert Diamond Hotel & Casino, 7350 S. The Key to Employment for the 21st Century Symposium Fundraiser

THE STORY: STEM education is the key to the economic future of our high school students
The Key to Employment for the 21st Century Symposium inspires students to pursue college, science, technology, and 21st Century careers. It provides high school students with an opportunity to meet industry professionals, ask about what kind of classes they should take, what kinds of careers are available to them and the exhibitors tell them about their personal stories about how they got into the STEM fields.
Some of the highlights that the kids commented on include "I got to go to the U of A," and "I got to talk to U of A Engineering," and "I got to talk to the Eller Management Program." The biggest excitement comes from the students touring the campus for the first time.
Your donation allows more youth to attend and learn about hi-tech careers that are available to them. Let's show our students that they can be a part of the 21st Century.

RCAC's SUMMER 2014: DESTINATION COLLEGE
The Metropolitan Education Commission Regional College Access Center is very
proud to announce the creation of the “SUMMER 2014: DESTINATION COLLEGE”
presentation series. The RCAC College Interns Program will offer hour long presentations in subjects ranging from college admissions to scholarships and financial aid. The RCAC will also offer one on one college planning appointments for

Ray Davies Student Service Award/Mayoral Recognition of Youth Service.
The Metropolitan Education Commission along with Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and the City's Human Relations Commission, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Tucson Service Learning Group would like to announce the Ray Davies Student Service Award/Mayoral Recognition of Youth Service.
This award will honor students who have best exhibited, as determined by the Youth Service Coalition, the qualities of leadership, community service, compassion for others, and who have encouraged mutual respect among diverse groups. We are inviting high schools to nominate current seniors who reflect and embody these values through their school and/or community activities and involvement in worthwhile causes. The recognition event will be held on April 11, 2014 at 4:00 pm on the main stage at the Pennington Street Block Party, 48 E. Pennington, sponsored by City High School.
To nominate members of your current senior class click here. Applications are due March 15, 2014.

1 Week From Today - First Generation Film Screening and Resource Fair!!!
Join us one week from today for a screening of the documentary film First Generation!!! The free screening is on Thursday, April 25th at 6pm at Pima Community College Center for the Arts, Proscenium Theater - West Campus. It's a feature documentary that chronicles the lives of four high-achieving, low-income high school students as they strive to be first in their families to go to college. The Metropolitan Education Commission is joining La Paloma Family Services and PCC West Campus Office of Student Life to present this special event. There will be a Resource Fair at 5pm to 6pm before the screening. BREAKING NEWS: Food Trucks! There will be a Food Truck Round Up accompanying the event from 4:30pm to 6:30pm! 2202 West Anklam, Tucson.
