This week, May 7-11, is Teacher Appreciation Week, and for Arizona this has a greater meaning this year. Over the past few weeks, we have witnessed a historic movement — #RedForEd — where Arizona teachers, school personnel, parents, students and community members joined forces to advocate for a quality education for Arizona students. Our teachers took the lead and put themselves on the frontline to advocate not only for themselves, but for their students. Homework Help and Learning Supports at the Pima County Public Library

Pima County Public Library (PCPL) supports learning and education in a variety of ways. Library staff provides programming in technology, creativity, skill building in reading and math, and STE(A)M topics that supplement and enhance what a student learns during the regular school day. Electronic resources include databases, tutorials, videos, audiobooks, ebooks, and access to practice tests and a writing lab, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Online tutors are available for students (K-College) to help with all subject areas from 2pm-11pm every day of the week. Face-to-face homework help is also available at a limited number of locations.
College-bound students can practice taking the PSAT, SAT, and ACT exams using Learning Express Library or they can use tools to prepare for college and the entrance exams with Gale Reference Center (http://www.library.pima.gov/resources/learn/study.php). PCPL also provides access to the Regional College Access Center in partnership with the Metropolitan Education Commission as well as other information related to colleges, scholarships, and financial aid (http://www.library.pima.gov/research/guides/colleges.php).
What do you need to access all of these great resources? A Library Card. September is National Library Card month and PCPL is dedicated to making sure every student has a card. Students can check out materials, use electronic resources at school or at home, or they can come to the library and use the public computers available at every location. In order to increase children's access to library resources, PCPL implemented a policy that no late fees are ever assessed to children's or teen's materials.
Where do you find all of this great information? http://www.library.pima.gov/resources/learn/ Our website has links to every resource you need to help your student learn. The information is easy to access and encourages parent participation in the process. Electronic resources include sample lesson plans, content level based on lexile scores, and cross-reference to other databases so you can create a comprehensive learning environment. Make flashcards, games, and interactive practice tests for any subject area.
How do you get your student a library card? You can have students take home a library card request form to be filled out by parents. Students return them to you with a parent signature and then you turn them into the library for issuance of a library card. Even if a child cannot get a parent signature, he/she can be issued a limited (complete computer and electronic resource access, 2-item checkout limit) library card. The request forms can be mailed, hand carried, or scanned in and emailed to a library staff person. Library cards can be delivered or mailed to your classroom.

The Symposium is designed to inspire students to pursue college, science, technology, and 21st Century careers. It provides students with an opportunity to meet industry professionals, to explore technologies, to learn about courses of study, skills and educational requirements that will prepare them for college, and to connect with colleges, trade schools, and community organizations that provide opportunities for internships and training. MEC Executive Director, Dr. June Webb-Vignery, states, “The Metropolitan Education Commission is pleased to sponsor the 17th Annual Key to Employment for the 21st Century Symposium.
The Symposium is an excellent opportunity for Tucson and Pima County high school students to meet with high-tech industry professionals and representatives from University of Arizona tech-oriented departments, allowing them to begin making career choices and understanding the academic requirements for achieving their goals. New Name for Rio Nuevo Contest
The "New Name for Rio Nuevo Contest" begins at 5:30 pm on December 10,and ends at 12 noon on January 10, 2013.
RIO NUEVO is looking to the next generation of Tucson citizens to help us find a new name!
Only Pima County high school seniors are eligible to enter. The new name must reflect Tucson's culture as well as our high hopes for the future.
There will be six semi-finalists, who will each receive a $500 cash scholarship to be used towards the college of your choice. And, if you choose to attend Pima Community College or the University of Arizona, your scholarship will be matched dollar for dollar at those schools.
The winner, will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship and again, the U of A and PCC will match it.
Deadline: Jan.10, 2013
Award: $500-$3000

Graduating seniors (or continuing current college students), Pima county residents, with a 2.5 GPA or better. Requirements: Complete Scholarship Application form (Download along with instruction letter form website below). Include cover letter describing yourself, your background, and your plans for the future, any special financial needs and an indication of how you will use the scholarship, if awarded. ALISA’S ANGELS SCHOLARSHIP - $2500
The Alisa’s Angels Foundation will award a $2500 scholarship to three Tucson-area graduating seniors in the spring of 2013.The scholarships will be awarded based on an individual’s service to others. The student nominee must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.To qualify, the student must submit the following by April 9, 2013:
- Nomination letter by a teacher, counselor or pastor (no longer than 500 words), that explains why this student deserves the scholarship
- Resume
- Unofficial transcript
- Typed essay (No longer than 500 words, double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman). Describe what you have done to help others. Briefly explain what you did, the challenges you faced, and the impact your actions had on you, those you helped, your family or the community.

The HOPE Expo is a workforce development collaborative effort among human services/behavioral health agencies in Southern Arizona and local academic institutions.
